Growing from Seeds

It is important to use fresh seeds because the seeds lose viability over time. The soil should be rich and the location should be sunny. Keeping the seeds in a dark and dry place at room temperature is the best way to keep them safe. Sowing can take place from spring to autumn, but will be most successful from spring to early summer and after the last frost. In tropical climates, sowing is possible in winter as well. Keep the seeds moist in a sunny location and water them regularly until they germinate, but do not overwater them. It is recommended to sow seeds 2 cm deep. It will take two weeks to one month for the seeds to germinate.

Growing from Cuttings

It is typical to take cuttings in January, refrigerate them, and then graft the cuttings onto rootstock in the early spring. From hearty water apple tree, cut a series of branches ranging from 4 to 6 inches in length. It is important to make sure that the branches are not too old and woody. It is best if they are partially green and have some new growth. With a clean, sharp knife, cut the branches at a 45-degree angle from the main plant.
Soaking the cut end of the cutting in rooting hormone after doing this gives a better chance of survival of the cutting, but it is optional. Soak your cuttings in water and plant one per pot. As they grow, maintain a moist but not soggy soil. For your cutting to root, it can take between 6 and 12 months.

Sunlight

Water Apple trees require full sunlight to survive. Ideally, you should plant this tree near a location that gets 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily. Do not plant the tree near tall plants or large buildings, protect it from shade.

Watering

There is a bit of a challenge involved in watering apple trees. They tend to thrive in moister climates rather than in dry ones. These trees can thrive in slightly arid soils, but permanent droughts can cause them serious problems.

Soil

Water apples grow best on mild acidic, mild alkaline, sandy, and clayey soils. It is recommended to grow water apple plants in coastal areas with mild alkaline soils and clayey soils for quality fruit.

Fertilizer

The water apple tree thrives in a high nitrogen environment, as do all fruit trees. An organic fertilizer such as 20-10-10 is an excellent supplement for mature trees growing in soil that doesn’t need much correction. Healthy growth is supported by maintaining a 2:1:1 nutrient balance.

Pruning

Early spring or late winters are the best times to prune water apple trees. In its mature state, the tree can reach a height of between 12 and 15 meters. Pruning the tree can, however, establish a better framework by adjusting the height between 4 and 5 meters. It is recommended that you prune your trees annually after harvest or before the production period to keep them at the desired height.
